Onomatopology is the study of onomatopoeias across different languages. By having several foreign language speakers voice over and invent a spoken soundtrack for an entirely silent movie, we are bringing forth the hidden worlds of sound across the various languages of the world. At times how different language’s reproduce sound can feel illogical and extremely incorrect.
It is through these moments when foreign onomatopoeias seem illogical, that ultimately reveal our bias towards assuming our mother tongue most accurately reflects nature. But we’ve been tricked, our own language is no more or less accurate than any other.
By presenting multiple foreign constructions of sound we hope to jar the listener and help them uncover their assumptions on what sounds sound like and what it means to be tricked by your mother tongue.
